The English language requirement for ILR and citizenship
Last updated
Most ILR and citizenship applicants must show English at CEFR level B1 in speaking and listening, through an approved English test, an English-taught degree, or nationality of a majority English-speaking country. It's separate from the Life in the UK test.
As well as the Life in the UK test, most applicants for ILR and British citizenship must prove they can speak and understand English.
The level you need
The usual requirement is CEFR level B1 in speaking and listening: enough to hold everyday conversations, follow clear speech and talk about familiar topics.
The government has announced plans to raise English requirements across the immigration system, including for settlement. If you’re applying soon, check the latest rules on GOV.UK.
Ways to meet it
- Pass an approved English test (SELT) at B1 or above in speaking and listening, taken with an approved provider.
- Hold a degree taught in English. UK degrees usually qualify; overseas degrees may need confirmation from Ecctis that they were taught in English to the required standard.
- Be a national of a majority English-speaking country, such as Australia, Canada, Jamaica, New Zealand or the USA.
Exemptions
You don’t usually need to meet the English requirement if you’re:
- under 18
- 65 or over
- unable to because of a long-term physical or mental condition
