You book the Life in the UK test online through the official booking service. The link starts on GOV.UK, which sends you to the booking site the Home Office uses, lituktestbooking.co.uk (run by PSI). It takes about 15 minutes.
Before you start
Have these ready:
- An email address you can access
- Valid ID, which you must also bring on the day (GOV.UK lists what’s accepted)
- A debit or credit card to pay the £50 fee
The name you book under must match your ID exactly. A mismatch is one of the most common reasons people are turned away.
Step by step
- Start on GOV.UK at gov.uk/book-life-in-uk-test, which takes you to the official booking site.
- Create an account with your email address.
- Enter your personal details and the ID you’ll bring on the day.
- Choose a test centre near you and pick a date and time at least 3 days away.
- Pay £50 by card.
- Check your confirmation email and keep it safe.
Choosing a date
Book a date that gives you enough time to prepare. Most people need a few weeks of regular study. A good signal you’re ready: you pass several timed mock tests in a row with 21 or more out of 24.
Tests in Wales and Scotland
The test is in English, but if you take it in Wales you can choose Welsh, and in Scotland you can choose Scottish Gaelic.
After you book
- Re-read your confirmation and check your name and ID details.
- Plan your journey and aim to arrive early.
- Read what to bring on the day.
- Keep practising with practice questions by topic.
Booking from the Life in the UK Prep app
When you reach the pass mark in a mock test, Life in the UK Prep shows a Book your test button that takes you to the official booking service, so you go straight to the right place.
