Life in the UK test day: what to bring and what to expect
Last updated
Bring the same ID you used to book and arrive early. You'll check in, take the 24-question test on a computer in 45 minutes, and find out whether you passed before you leave.
Test day is simple if you prepare. Here’s what to bring and what happens from arrival to result.
What to bring
- The same ID you used when you booked. It must match exactly. If it doesn’t, you can’t sit the test and you won’t get a refund.
- Your booking confirmation, in case you’re asked for details.
Check GOV.UK for the current list of accepted ID before you go.
Leave your phone, notes and anything else you don’t need. Personal belongings are stored away during the test.
When you arrive
Arrive early. Staff will check your ID and booking before you’re shown to a computer. Allow plenty of time for check-in, especially at busy centres.
During the test
- 24 questions, one at a time, on a computer.
- 45 minutes in total, with a timer on screen.
- Most questions have four options with one right answer. Some ask you to decide if a statement is true or false, or to pick two answers.
- There’s no penalty for wrong answers, so answer everything.
If you’ve practised in the same format with timed mock tests, nothing on the day will feel unfamiliar.
Your result
You’ll find out whether you passed before you leave. If you pass, you’ll be given a unique reference number. You’ll need it for your ILR or citizenship application, and it doesn’t expire.
If you don’t pass, you can book again after 7 days. See what to do if you fail.
Tips for the day
- Sleep well and eat beforehand; 45 minutes of concentration is easier on a full stomach.
- Read every question twice. Many wrong answers come from misreading “which is not” questions.
- Don’t dwell on a hard question. With under two minutes per question, a quick best guess beats running out of time.
