Failed the Life in the UK test? What to do next
Last updated
If you fail the Life in the UK test you can book again after 7 days, paying the £50 fee again. There's no limit on retakes, and with focused practice on your weak topics most people pass next time.
Failing the Life in the UK test is frustrating, but it’s common and easy to recover from. Here’s what to do.
The rules on retakes
- Wait at least 7 days before your next attempt.
- Pay £50 again for each retake.
- No limit on the number of attempts.
- A failed attempt doesn’t count against you in your ILR or citizenship application.
Why people fail
- Relying on general knowledge. The test checks specific facts from the handbook, not what a typical British person knows.
- Weak history. Dates, monarchs, battles and laws make up a large share of questions.
- Not practising under time pressure. 45 minutes goes faster than you expect.
- Misreading questions, especially ones that ask which option is not true.
A plan to pass next time
Week 1: find your weak spots. Take a mock test and look at your score by topic. Most people find one or two chapters cost them most of their marks.
Week 2: fix them. Re-read those chapters of the handbook, then practise questions by topic until you’re getting nearly all of them right. Learn the key dates.
Before you rebook: take timed mock tests until you score 21 or more out of 24 several times in a row.
How Life in the UK Prep helps after a fail
