Who is exempt from the Life in the UK test?

Last updated

You usually don't need to take the Life in the UK test if you're under 18, aged 65 or over, or have a long-term physical or mental condition that makes it impossible. Some visa routes also don't require it.

Most people applying for ILR or British citizenship aged 18 to 65 must pass the Life in the UK test. But some people are exempt.

Age exemptions

  • Under 18: you don’t need to take the test.
  • 65 or over: you don’t need to take the test. Your age on the date you apply is what counts.

Medical exemptions

You may be exempt if you have a long-term physical or mental condition that means you can’t take the test, for example a severe learning disability or a condition that affects memory. You’ll usually need an exemption form completed by a doctor, and you include it with your application.

A temporary illness, or simply finding the test difficult, doesn’t qualify.

Routes that don’t need the test

Some immigration routes don’t require the Life in the UK test for settlement, such as certain humanitarian or victim-of-domestic-abuse routes. Check the rules for your route on GOV.UK.

Exempt from the test, but not from English?

The English language requirement has its own exemptions, which overlap but aren’t identical. See the English requirement for ILR.

Not exempt? You can still pass easily

If you need to take the test, a few weeks of steady practice is usually enough. Start with our Life in the UK test guide and a sample mock test.
